In the Chinese solar calendar, Chu Shu marks the traditional end of summer. To commemorate the occasion, Sasol China’s Handicraft Club, in collaboration with Amity Foundation, organized a unique cultural event at the Haolaiwu Senior Home on 24 August.
The celebration brought together residents of the home and Sasol employees and family members for an intergenerational tie-dying workshop, designed to preserve and promote Chinese crafts. Parents and children worked together with elderly residents to create beautiful tie-dyed fabrics, an art form that has been passed down through the generations.
The event highlighted not only the beauty and skill involved in traditional tie-dying but also promoted the values of respecting, caring, supporting and assisting the elderly – aligning with the Chinese cultural emphasis on filial piety and community care for the aging population.
"By engaging in this hands-on activity, we hope to foster a sense of community and mutual respect," said event organiser Qin Zhang. "It's a small step towards raising awareness about the importance of caring for our elders and preserving our cultural heritage."
Both the families and the elders appreciated the workshop, with participants expressing their delight at learning a new skill while also contributing to a meaningful cause. The colourful tie-dyed creations will serve as a reminder of the day's activities and the rich cultural and societal traditions of China.
This event also demonstrated the ongoing efforts to keep traditional Chinese crafts alive and to integrate them into modern society, ensuring that the wisdom of the past continues to enrich the lives of present and future generations.
