Sasol Chemicals (USA) utilizes a science- and risk-based approach for prioritizing its products produced in the United States. It employs a screening level assessment that considers both the degree of hazard and extent of exposure potential in setting priorities. This process is based on the American Chemistry Council Prioritization Screening Approach and includes use of the U.N. Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling (GHS) criteria for both human and ecological health. These criteria are based on toxicology and ecological data. The screening assessment also considers how a product is used and its use pattern (e.g., industrial, commercial or consumer uses), its production volume, and whether the product is persistent or bioaccumulative. The hazard and exposure elements described above are considered together when placing a product grouping in a risk-based prioritization ranking.
Using this assessment, Sasol Chemicals (USA) product categories are categorized as High, Medium, and Low Risk. Product Stewardship Summaries are then developed for these product groups based on the Risk categorization. These summaries provide general product information and are not intended to provide comprehensive safety, health and environmental information. Sasol safety data sheets and safe handling documents are available for further details.
Sasol Chemicals (USA) Phenolics product risk management is a cross-functional effort grounded in mutual commitment to health, safety and environmental protection throughout the product life cycle. Sasol utilizes a product development and modification process to evaluate and communicate health and safety hazards of both experimental and commercial products. A defined management of change process includes creation of new commercial products. This ensures development of product safety data sheets and labels to communicate product safety information to employees and all who handle, transport or use Sasol products. Fulfillment of product sample requests and approval of prospective customers and distributors take place after requested product stewardship information is received and evaluated regarding the intended application as well as product safety awareness and safe handling processes.
An annual Phenolics product risk review is conducted which includes product hazard & regulatory changes (if any0, research & development activity, product sales information for the year, customer and distributor performance, product stewardship incidents (if any), carrier performance, supplier performance, review of risk ranking criteria and accounts highlighted based on the criteria, and Identification and assignment of risk management actions.
The results of this review are documented and communicated to Phenolics management and broadly throughout the organization. Progress on action items is periodically reviewed.
