Sasol Chemicals is dedicated to achieving meaningful sustainability goals

We are focused on reducing our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2030, using 2017 as our baseline. Looking ahead, we aim to achieve net zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG by 2050.
Our evolving strategies to reach these targets include increasing the use of renewable electricity, adopting low-carbon energy sources for steam production, and prioritizing energy and process efficiency initiatives.Beyond 2026, we plan to undertake significant initiatives like Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), which will require substantial capital investments.

Operations
Achieve energy efficient operations to reduce the footprint of our products
Our key activities include:
Renewable Energy
In Germany renewable power purchase agreements have been finalized and we are planning further agreements for our production sites in Brunsbüttel and Marl. For Italy Solar energy will be utilized at our plants in Augusta and Sicily and in South Africa we are focusing on both solar and wind energy for our plants in Sasolburg and Secunda. Our North American operations are currently planning projects for renewable electricity aimed at reducing Scope 2 emissions at our plant in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA.
Process Optimization
Key future focus areas include the development of an energy-efficiency programme for our plant at Lake Charles, Lousiana, USA and full implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven process optimization application.
Recent studies on Carbon Capture, Use & Storage (CCUS) have been completed, identifying the optimal process scope to achieve the necessary product quality while meeting storage requirements. Our U.S. assets, along with several in Europe, are strategically located in industry corridors that are well-suited for CCUS collaboration.
Moreover, we closely monitor developments in electrification and potentially blue and green hydrogen, which are expected to contribute towards achieving our target.
Market Solutions
Meet market sustainability needs by providing solutions through our unique chemistry

ISCC (“International Sustainability and Carbon Certification”)
Sasol Chemicals participate in the certification process of the “International Sustainability and Carbon Certification” (ISCC). The ISCC has established an international, practically viable, and transparent chain of custody certification system for the needs of different markets. ISCC PLUS is a voluntary sustainability certification program for bio, bio-circular (waste-biomass), and circular (recycled) raw materials for markets and sectors that are currently not regulated.

RSPO (“Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil”)
Sasol Chemicals is a member of the “Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil”. The RSPO was established in 2004 to promote the production and use of sustainable palm (kernel) oil and derivatives. One of the key activities of this global, non-profit organization consists of developing and implementing global standards for sustainable palm oil.

ASD (“Action for Sustainable Derivatives”)
Sasol Chemicals is membeer of the of “Action for Sustainable Derivatives”(ASD). The ASD is an industry-led platform which brings together companies in the cosmetics, home and personal care, and oleochemicals industries to collectively tackle environmental and social supply chain issues around palm oil and palm kernel oil derivatives, and expanding into other derivative commodities.
For the activities mentioned above, we have either obtained or are in the process of obtaining the following certifications.
Product Portfolio
Deliver a more sustainable and circular product portfolio
Surfactants, which act as detergents, dispersants, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and wetting agents, are vital in personal care and other applications. However, their traditional production from petrochemicals or tropical oils poses environmental challenges and high carbon emissions, and some can irritate the skin and scalp. Biosurfactants, on the other hand, are naturally produced by fermentation from oils and sugars, offering a more sustainable and biodegradable alternative with a lower carbon footprint. Notably, glycolipids are particularly beneficial in rinse-off formulations, providing excellent cleansing, foaming, and skin care properties.
Sasol’s new CARINEX SL (sophorolipid) product range comes in two different 60 % active product types, specifically designed to maximise formulation design flexibility and efficiency. CARINEX SL L is a mild and low foaming lactonic sophorolipid rich type, while CARINEX SL A is a mild and higher foaming acidic sophorolipid rich type.
Sustainable care solutions for household and industrial cleaning
Biosurfactants are natural compounds produced by living organisms, such as bacteria and yeast. Surfactants play a crucial role in fabric and home care, in industrial and institutional applications and beyond.
Sasol’s new LIVINEX SL is a sophorolipid, multifunctional ingredient with excellent performance for sustainable cleaning solutions. Unlike traditional surfactants derived from petroleum, LIVINEX SL is sourced from palm-free natural oils, making it a sustainable option for personal care, home care, and industrial cleaning. Biosurfactants, produced by fermentation from natural oils and sugars, should not be confused with bio-based surfactants. They are more sustainable, have a lower carbon footprint, are fully biodegradable, and are well tolerated by aquatic organisms.
Partnering
Unlocking opportunities through collaboration
Care-O-Sene project
Sasol Limited and Sasol Germany are part of the German-South African research project CARE-O-SENE (Catalyst Research for Sustainable Kerosene). The international consortium will enable the highly efficient and sustainable production of environmentally friendly aviation fuels by developing new and improved catalysts for Power-to-Liquids processes.
The project’s rapid catalyst research is crucial to the industry’s ability to efficiently produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in sufficient quantities. The aim is to pave the way for the production of green aviation fuel on an industrial scale.

Biosurfactants
Holiferm and Sasol Chemicals expand collaboration to develop and market sustainable surfactants. The partnership will use Holiferm’s proprietary technology to develop the fermentation-derived biosurfactants. Sasol and Holiferm will develop and commercialise formulations and applications for the new molecules.
Biosurfactants use natural materials to produce surfactants, which are key ingredients in detergents, cleaning products and personal care products. Sophorolipids, rhamnolipids and MELs are all glycolipids made through fermentation, using yeast or bacteria to convert vegetable oils and/or sugars into final product. The Holiferm process offers an extensive reduction in carbon footprint compared with conventional surfactants.
Sustainable ingredients in care chemicals
Sasol Chemicals will evaluate the effectiveness of Solugen’s proprietary products, blends and derivatives in its household, personal care, and industrial and institutional cleaning surfactant formulations, initially focusing on chelating agents.
Solugen’s bio-based ingredients are high-performing and cost-competitive materials used in detergents, cleaning products, and personal care products. Solugen manufactures these ingredients at its Bioforge facility in Houston, which uses a first-of-its-kind chemienzymatic process to convert plant-derived substances into essential materials that traditionally relied on fossil fuels – all with no or low emissions and waste
